Article access (app edition)

Role: UX designer

Situation

Despite positive feedback from a recent redesign, users of the newspaper's tablet app reported difficulties accessing and navigating between articles within an edition.

Task

Our goal was to improve the overall user experience by making it easier to move between articles on the tablet app without cluttering the interface.

Project success

✅ Easier access to articles through improved navigation.
✅ User effectiveness score increased from 3.3 to 5.7 (out of 7).
✅ Positive user feedback on the new experience.

Action

I partnered with a UX researcher to survey over 1,000 users and identify key navigation pain points, explored and iterated on multiple design directions, introduced a floating action button (FAB) to simplify article navigation while keeping the UI clean, and conducted usability testing to validate and refine the solution.

Result

The FAB solution tested well, with most users navigating articles more easily and intuitively. The feature was implemented and released to a subset of users for further validation and usage tracking.

  • "it’s nice to be able to scan articles by swiping left and right. It make it easy to get an overview of the day’s interesting stories"

Outcome

The improved navigation experience was successfully rolled out in a phased release, leading to better engagement and easier article discovery.

Personal highlights

  • Tackling real user pain points uncovered through research.

  • Learning how users naturally navigate within a digital publication.

  • Collaborating with researchers and developers as part of a cross-functional team.
